Why You Should Create a “Do Not Play” List for Your Wedding DJ

When planning your wedding playlist, it's easy to focus on your favorite songs—but don’t forget to list the songs you don’t want to hear. Creating a “Do Not Play” list for your DJ is just as important as selecting your must-plays.

Start by thinking about songs that bring up awkward memories or feel overplayed. Maybe there’s a breakup anthem that reminds you of your ex. Maybe you don’t want line dances like the "Cha-Cha Slide" or "Macarena" making an appearance.

Also consider lyrics. Some couples skip songs with suggestive or inappropriate messages, especially during dinner or when older guests are present.

Be honest with your DJ. They’ve likely worked dozens of weddings and understand that each couple has different preferences. A professional will appreciate your clarity, and it makes their job easier.

You don’t need to overthink it. Just list the top 5–10 songs or styles that are absolute no-gos and hand it over. You’ll feel confident knowing that your wedding music will sound like you and not like a night out you didn’t ask for.
