As wedding guests gather around her table, curiosity usually follows. Someone inevitably asks if she is tracing or using a computer, but the truth is simple. Each portrait is hand painted on the spot, brush to paper, in real time. Katie just smiles and keeps on painting.
As the live wedding painter and owner of Watercolor Mercantile, Katie Kullman is bringing something fresh, interactive, and deeply personal to wedding days across the St. Louis and Southwest Missouri wedding market.

With her unique approach, Katie’s art turns the focus to wedding guest experience. During the reception, Katie paints custom watercolor portraits of guests, creating one-of-a-kind keepsakes they take home that same night.

Couples are clinging to this unique wedding reception idea because it doubles as entertainment while also offering a meaningful wedding favor for guests to enjoy. It is part of what makes the experience so captivating for wedding guests.

Katie’s creative roots run deep. She attended the University of Missouri and earned a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art, focusing on drawing and printmaking.
“I never actually took a formal watercolor course,” Katie said. “Everything I know about watercolor came from watching tutorials, lots of trial and error, applying what I learned about color theory, and plenty of practice.”
She launched her art business in 2020 under the name Confectionery Cutie, where she created original artwork inspired by animals and food, along with miniature watercolor pet portrait commissions. By 2025, after planning her own wedding, she expanded into the wedding industry and officially launched Watercolor Mercantile.
“I was planning my own wedding and live guest portraits were becoming more popular on social media,” she said. “I definitely had that ‘Hey, I can do that!’ moment.”
What Makes Watercolor Mercantile Different
While many live wedding painters focus on large canvas portraits of the couple, Katie specializes exclusively in live faceless guest portraits. Each portrait is completed in under five minutes, yet still captures personality and likeness in a charming, simplified style.

“Guests are always amazed that I can paint each portrait in under five minutes and that it still looks so much like them, even without facial features. Sometimes it even becomes an emotional moment for them,” she said.
Her setup itself is part of what makes Watercolor Mercantile stand out. A live feed viewing monitor is included as part of her standard experience, allowing guests to watch each portrait come to life in real time. For couples wanting to elevate the experience even further, she also offers an upgrade for a custom sticker vending machine rental that adds an additional interactive element to the celebration.
Custom Sticker Vending Machine Experience
The custom sticker vending machine is often used during cocktail hour or at bridal showers. Couples collaborate with Katie at least three months in advance to design illustrations that represent their relationship.

Shared hobbies, favorite foods, pets, monograms, and inside jokes all make great designs. One of her favorite concepts so far featured a chicken wing and French fries because it was the couple’s favorite meal to share.
“It’s always so fun seeing the creative ideas couples come up with,” Katie said.
During the event, guests use provided tokens to select stickers or even magnets or keychains through the machine. It creates an interactive experience and adds personality to the reception.
“It’s always a hit with guests of all ages,” she said.
An Unforgettable Addition to Your Wedding Reception
For couples looking to elevate their wedding reception with meaningful entertainment and personalized favors, Watercolor Mercantile offers an experience guests will remember long after the celebration ends.
“I love getting to have fun doing what I love while seeing everyone’s reactions to my artwork,” she said. “The atmosphere is always incredible. It’s also so exciting to finally see my couples enjoying the biggest day of their lives and to hear all the heartfelt speeches.”
